Michael W. Cappello, CEO
Mr. Cappello has over twenty-seven years of diverse management experience as an executive manager, senior manager, consultant and engineer in the US and international nuclear industry. He has applied his management expertise to companies and projects serving the US commercial nuclear utility industry, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the US Department of Defense (DOD) and the UK government’s nuclear industry. Mr. Cappello’s specializes in developing and growing sustainable businesses and he is an expert at the successful project management of large multi million dollar projects/ventures. He has in-depth knowledge in the areas of engineering, product development, production management, business operations and nuclear facility operations. Mr. Cappello was one of the first 250 people in the world certified as a “Professional Project Manager” by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in 1990 and has trained hundreds of project and program managers since.
Mr. Cappello specializes in the management of large multi-billion dollar, complex projects with experience in all key phases of the project life cycle including: conceptual, planning, ROI analysis, design, construction, start-up, operations (outage and maintenance), production management and decommissioning and dismantlement (D&D). Mr. Cappello has a proven track record for turning troubled projects and companies into successes for his customers through expert leadership skills, unique vision and his extensive project management experience.
As Chief Executive Officer for S.A.Robotics, Mr. Cappello is responsible for the management and development of a “World Class” innovative custom robotics company serving the US DOE, US DOD, UK government and commercial industry. Mr. Cappello’s leadership has transformed S.A.Robotics into one of the fastest growing companies in the US with 2000% growth in four years earning it a place on the Inc. Magazine’s, Inc. 500 List (the 500 fastest growing companies in the U.S.) for two years in a row (2004 and 2005) and the Inc. 5000 list in 2006 and 2007. Mr. Cappello was also a 2005 finalist for the Ernst and Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” and won the 2007 Ernst and Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” award for his innovative business approaches. Mr. Cappello’s unique business philosophy and approach is also one of the key subjects of New York’s Best Seller List author Jim Champy’s book “Outsmart” published in 2007.
As an Executive Consultant under contract through Williams Professional Services to the U.S. Under Secretary of Energy, Mr. Cappello headed a national team of experts to study the National Transuranic (TRU) Waste Capacity in the U.S. Mr. Cappello’s team rapidly identified ways to improve and accelerate the nation’s ability to consolidate, package and transport the surplus “Cold War Arms Race” plutonium waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. This project was a national risk reduction priority in light of September 11th and the national homeland defense priorities since studies showed that 53 million US citizens live within a 50-mile radius of surplus plutonium leftover from the “Cold War Arms Race” produced from the 1950’s thru the 1980’s. This project was completed on schedule and budget and the actions sited resulted in the improved through put goals and objectives of the Federal Government.
As Senior Vice President, Informatics Corp. Mr. Cappello obtained substantial, results-driven growth within his division, contributing to Informatics Corporation’s explosive growth from $14 million per year to $45 million per year. During his tenure, Informatics was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the top 500 fastest growing companies in the U.S. for two years in a row (2000 and 2001). In addition to his position as Sr. Vice President, Mr. Cappello also served as the Nuclear Production Manager for the Rocky Flats Technology Site (RFETS) Building 707 and 371 Transuranic Waste consolidation and packaging projects. These two buildings housed the last of the nuclear operations and plutonium processing performed at RFETS in preparation for Decommissioning and Dismantlement and Environmental Clean-up of this Cold War Facility.
Prior to joining Informatics, Mr. Cappello was an Executive Consultant, Senior Project Manager and Chief Engineer for Science Application International Corp. (SAIC), a major ($3 billion/year) technical consulting firm, responsible for oversight and improvements to $750 million of infrastructure construction projects, waste management and environmental restoration capital construction projects at a major U.S. DOE facility. He was instrumental in accomplishing major schedule and cost performance improvements for these projects.
Mr. Cappello has also provided executive level, international telecommunications project management consulting for AT&T for a competitively bid $4 billion dollar infrastructure construction project in Thailand. Mr. Cappello played a key role in helping the AT&T senior management team win their first strategically key large international project, competing against large firms from Japan. Germany, Holland and Sweden, Mr Cappello consulted to and trained the senior level project managers for this major procurement and project delivery. Mr. Cappello provided in-country (Thailand) project management and controls presentations to the Thai Government Agencies and established in-country project management programs and controls systems to demonstrate AT&T’s project management strengths to the Thai customer.
Mr. Cappello was also the winning proposal and project manager for SAIC a major US ($3 billion/year) technical consulting firm that integrated a consortium of mid-size commercial nuclear utilities’ supply chain management programs with electronic commerce, strengthening the utilities’ competitive positions in the deregulated power utility market place.
During his career, Mr. Cappello has also provided senior consulting and project management services to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Institute for Nuclear Power Operations (INPO). Mr. Cappello started his career in 1981 as an Instrument and Controls (I&C) Engineer and Senior Project Engineer for Stone and Webster Engineering Co., a major architect engineering firm, and was responsible for many of the post Three Mile Island reactor and plant modifications and equipment qualifications at six U.S. commercial nuclear power plants.
Mr. Cappello graduated in 1981 with a B.S. Degree in Engineering and minor degrees in Mathematics and Physics from Regis University. Mr. Cappello and his wife Cheri, of 30 years, live on their family cattle ranch in Colorado and have three children.
